Leon Chen, MD, is a distinguished board-certified dermatologist and a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. He earned his Medical Doctorate from the University of Texas McGovern Medical School at Houston. Dr. Chen completed his dermatology residency training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center/University of Texas McGovern Medical School combined program. His pursuit of excellence continued with a Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology (Mohs) fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
During his residency, Dr. Chen’s exceptional contributions were recognized with the Review Article Incentive Program award by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS). His fellowship training focused on Mohs micrographic surgery, advanced reconstruction, and clinical research in cutaneous oncology. Serving as a sub-investigator in various clinical trials, he evaluated the efficacy of hedgehog pathway inhibitors and immunotherapy for advanced nonmelanoma skin cancer.
Dr. Chen’s commitment to advancing dermatological knowledge is evident in his extensive body of work, comprising over 30 peer-reviewed research manuscripts and numerous book chapters. His research findings have been presented at national and international dermatology meetings. Dr. Chen further demonstrates his leadership in the field by serving as the editor of the textbook “Basal Cell Carcinoma: Advances in Treatment and Research.”
Certified by the American Board of Dermatology and recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery, Dr. Chen is an active member of professional organizations such as the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the American College of Mohs Surgery, the American Medical Association, and the Texas Medical Association.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Chen finds joy in spending quality time with his wife, Patty, and their two young boys, Levi and Luke. An avid sports fan, he follows teams such as the Rockets, the Texans, the Astros, and passionately supports his alma mater, the Texas Longhorns.
