Why Choose Elite Dermatology & Plastic Surgery for Seborrheic Keratosis Treatment

At Elite Dermatology & Plastic Surgery, we understand that seborrheic keratoses can be a source of concern. Our experienced team of board-certified dermatologists provides careful diagnosis using advanced tools like dermoscopy and, if needed, a skin biopsy to confirm the nature of the lesion. If treatment is desired, we offer effective, in-office procedures tailored to your comfort, skin type, and goals.

What Is a Seborrheic Keratosis?

Seborrheic keratoses are non-cancerous skin growths that often appear as brown, black, or tan lesions with a waxy or “stuck-on” look. They may be flat or raised and tend to occur on the trunk, face, neck, or scalp. They do not develop on the palms or soles. These growths are very common in older adults and can range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters.

Though their appearance can vary, they are not contagious or harmful. However, due to their irregular texture and coloring, seborrheic keratoses are often mistaken for warts or melanoma.

Did You Know?
Over 90% of adults over the age of 60 have one or more seborrheic keratoses. Some people have over 100 of them! These growths are not contagious but do seem to run in families.

What Are the Treatment Options for Seborrheic Keratoses?

While treatment is not medically necessary, many patients choose removal due to irritation, friction, or cosmetic reasons. The best treatment for seborrheic keratoses depends on the location and size of the lesion and your skin type and tone. Our dermatologists offer several minimally invasive options, including:

  • Cryotherapy – Freezes the lesion with liquid nitrogen, causing it to fall off over time
  • Electrodesiccation and curettage – Uses heat to dry out the lesion, followed by gently scraping away the remaining growth tissue
  • Shave removal – Carefully shaves the growth down to the skin’s surface
  • Laser therapy – Targets pigmentation and texture with precision

How much does seborrheic keratosis removal cost in the Houston area?

The cost of seborrheic keratosis removal depends on the patient’s unique treatment plan. The method of removal, number of removal sites, and other factors can impact the total price. We will provide a clear cost estimate during your consultation.

K
L
Will insurance cover seborrheic keratosis removal?

Insurance typically does not cover seborrheic keratosis removal for cosmetic reasons. If removal is deemed medically necessary, such as due to bleeding, pain, or irritation, treatment may be covered by insurance. Elite Dermatology & Plastic Surgery works with many insurance companies, and we encourage you to check with your provider regarding your coverage.

Are seborrheic keratoses dangerous?

Although seborrheic keratoses are not dangerous, it can be difficult to distinguish them from skin cancer lesions. Our dermatologist may examine the lesion closely with a dermatoscope to confirm the diagnosis. Sometimes a skin biopsy is required for definitive diagnosis. It is always a good idea to have your skin checked if you have any concerning or suspicious lesions.

Can seborrheic keratoses turn into skin cancer?

Seborrheic keratoses do not become cancerous. However, if a lesion changes rapidly, bleeds, itches, or has an unusual appearance, it should be examined to rule out malignancy.

What is the main cause of seborrheic keratoses?

The exact cause is unknown, but genetics and aging play a significant role. These lesions often run in families and tend to appear more frequently as people get older.
